An achingly beautiful record from <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/big-thief">Big Thief</a> vocalist, Adrianne Lenker. This is the Minnesota-born musician as she is, with very little else. Her voice is centre stage, which flickers, dancing and diving over the songs like an autumn sun on a frost-bitten morning. Lenker's ability to let you inside, to do away with the barrier between artist and listener is more striking than ever before. The gentle flutters whisper in your ear like secrets shared between you and her. The intimacy is so that every pick, every chord change carries with it an unmilled ripple and a chirp.

Recorded with Luke Temple of Here We Go Magic, the 10 songs were written in snatched moments on the relentless Big Thief tour. Lenker sounds raw, her lyrics organic. They escape her lungs with little scrutiny but plenty of emotion.

The album is understated and unassuming. It could have been discovered in a dusty cabin, penned by a long-lost folk-hero from the 60s. Adrianne serenades us with her songbook of gently reflective golden lullabies wistfully. It's delicate, enchanting and irresistible. A gorgeous and affecting listen especially if you have a tendency for likes of <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/jessica-pratt">Jessica Pratt</a>, <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/kath-bloom">Kath Bloom</a>, and <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/joan-baez">Joan Baez</a>.

Brisbane teens James Harrison, Louis Forster and drummer Riley Jones released their first album when still in high school. This album was recorded in Melbourne with James Cecil and Cameron Bird (of Architecture in Helsinki).

Swaying, lurching pop rattles it’s chains and drags you along in an effluence of happy songs like a mesmerised cult follower of melody. Laconic vocalists are all at ease in their world of music and croon along to the sweetest of swooning organs.

We're Not Talking shows how much can change between the ages of 17 and 19. It's a record that takes the enthusiasms of youth and twists them into darker, more sophisticated shapes. Relationships are now laced with hesitation, remorse, misunderstanding and ultimately compassion. Drummer Riley Jones really comes to the fore here, joining Louis and James in singing lead and writing songs for the first time, making the band the musical equivalent of an equilateral triangle (the strongest shape in physics). Delivering brilliantly human and brutally honest vignettes of adolescent angst, The Goon Sax brim with personality, charm and heart-wrenching honesty. We’re Not Talking is a record made by restless artists, defying expectations as if hardly noticing, and its complexity makes 'We're Not Talking' even more of a marvel. For fans of The Modern Lovers, DIY Australian music from the late 70's and Galaxie 500.
