This latest collection from afro vintage specialists Analog Africa is one funky freak-out of a history lesson. 

As with the label's two previous single artist collections of zimbabwean music, African Scream Contest is the result of label boss Samy Ben Redjeb's digging for audio gold in dusty vinyl vaults (this time in the twin west african countries of Benin and Togo). The tunes that made him shout 'eureka!' are the ones that make up the 14 tracks on this collection of 70's sounds. rock, salsa and soul influences are strong throughout, Roger Damawuzan's wait for me for example, explodes with funky JBs horns and screeching vocals. the sounds of neighbouring Ghana and Nigeria are also in evidence (check the powerhouse afrobeat of Tidjani Kone's djanfa magni), and the local rhythms used in religious rituals form a rock hard backbone to everything here. a mind blowing collection of rare music worth discovering.
