as is the case for most of these north african singers, mohamed khlifati aka cheb mami, born in sada in 1966, started his musical career by singing at weddings and circumcision celebrations. he rallied the ranks of star fellow-countrymen like khaled in 1998 with his album meli meli, featuring the duo parisien du nord with k-mel from alliance ethnik, produced by imhotep from iam. his carrier took an international turn through an album of duos with well-established artists such as zucchero, idir, ziggy marley and sting. the maghreb soul series is dedicated to the formative years of the ra genre, a fusion of the north african arabic sound and musical intonations with the glitzy pop flooding over from the other shores of the mediterranean. five albums in all make up the series, featuring artist collections by cheb khaled, cheb mami, cheb hasni, cheikha rimitti and a various artists collection.
