a follow-up to last year's 'dumb supper' album, husband and wife team cath and phil tyler return with 'the hind wheels of bad luck', recorded over a long weekend in morden tower, the legendary music venue built into newcastle's old town walls. this seems like an ideally resonant location for these two to record their music; so much of what they do seems to be inherited from some ancient source, and on these recordings the anglo-american duo evoke the folk music of the past in the most accomplished and proficient manner, with some great storytelling from cath, and brilliant acoustic guitar playing (especially on 'the wind that shakes the barley') along the way. it's raw and powerfully emotive folk music that goes direct to the source, mining through their own contacts and treasure troves such as the anne and frank warner collection and the sacred harp song book, re-interpreting or adding their own music, and surfacing with pure gold.
